On Friday 13^th August twenty eight members of the society headed off to Villaitana for the playing of a Medal competition, sponsored by Tony Carroll. Ominous storm clouds swirled above the Costa Blanca, and the weather forecast predicted heavy rains for the day, however with all but one member taking buggy’s we set off on what proved to be an exciting day’s golf. The first disappointment came however when we discovered buggy’s were to be restricted to the paths, which means on this course that the buggy riders ended up walking further than the walker. The first soaking of the day occurred by the 7^th green when Jim Fletchers buggy broke down just as a sprinkler came on, trapping the rest of the group in the jets of water. It seemed Friday 13^th was to take it’s toll when, thirty minutes later, the heavens opened and with a sky full of towering black clouds it looked set for the day. Luck was on our side however as, despite playing under the threat of more rain, we all managed to complete our round without another soaking. Must have been the luck of the Irish Tony!!!!!!

On to the results, and in third place with a creditable nett 75 from 7.2 was new member Colin Cooper, who seems not to have been out of the prizes since he joined us. Second place went to founder member Richard Morris with an excellent nett 74 off 20.3, and today’s winner was Mike Garfield with a fabulous nett 69 in very difficult conditions off 11.7. Nearest the pins were for the third shots on two par fives today, and they were won by Paul Edwards on the 4^th and Colin Cooper on the 11^th. I did not see Colin’s shots but he says they were all excellent. I can confirm however that Paul’s three shots consisted of an indifferent drive, a thinned five wood running through two fairway bunkers, and a brilliant six iron to eighteen inches before sinking the putt for a birdie. Two’s were recorded by Mike Garfield, Colin Foster, Tony Carroll and Gordon Gleeson.  In the second round of the singles knockout Ed Wallace comprehensively disposed of Bob Edwards 7 and 5. Finally Ros Fletcher won the prize for the best ladies score however as we only had two lady members playing today, and one had a “no return”, we are convinced Tony only put the prize up for the kiss afterwards.
