Oliva Nova Winners | | On Friday 27th August 28 intrepid members made their way to Oliva Nova for the playing of a stableford competition. Today’s competition was kindly sponsored by Alan Hunter as a celebration of his 81st, yes that is not a misprint, 81st birthday. Alan seems to get younger rather than older every year, and long may this wonderful gentleman be able to honour us with his presence. In the UK golfers look forward to summer golf, and loath cold dank winters, however on the Costa Blanca golf in August is nothing if not hard work. Today was no exception with afternoon temperatures in the mid 40’s, and several sweat drenched members staggered rather than strolled off the 18th green as the searing heat took it’s toll. To the Society's credit however most members managed in excess of 30 points on the day, and the winning scores were nothing short of exceptional. In third place was Bob Tucker, despite his long trousers and shirt, managing to amass 37 points off 14.4. Second, with the same score off a lower handicap was “straight” Gordon Gleeson off 12.2 - does he ever miss a fairway - whilst today’s winner was Russ Peters, again with 37 points off his newly reduced handicap of 9.5. Nearest the pin on the 3rd was Trevor Colgate, whilst John Lamont shot off his seat to claim nearest the pin on the 16th, despite being told that today’s 81 year old sponsor’s tee shot was actually inside his. Does the man have no shame!!! Longest drive for men on the 9th was claimed by Russ Peters, and for the ladies by Ros Fletcher. Two’s were scored by Russ Peters, John Lamont and Ros Fletcher, whilst John Costigan won the final prize of the day by coming 9th, the sum of Alan’s age. In the annual eclectic competition Neil Carter still holds a slender lead over Bob Edwards, however with a dozen players within four shots there is still everything to play for. Likewise in the Totalcare “Player of the Year” competition Bob Edwards holds pole position over Gordon Gleeson, all details of which can be viewed on the web site. Our next meeting is on the 10th of September at Bonalba Golf. Members wishing to play should book in using the online form at www.montgogolfsociety.net. Guests are welcome, subject to availability and current handicap certificate | |
